Stress Is More Than a Feeling: What Science Says About Chronic Stress, Emergency Care, and Sound Bath

 

We wake up already thinking about what needs to be done. We move from work to family responsibilities, traffic, emails, financial pressures, notifications, and an endless stream of information. At night, the body may be tired while the mind is still running.

We call it “normal.”

But physiologically, the body does not simply ignore chronic stress because we have learned to live with it.

Stress produces measurable changes throughout the body. And when the stress response remains activated repeatedly or for long periods, it can affect sleep, mood, cardiovascular health, metabolism, concentration, and overall well-being.

The question is not whether we can eliminate every stressful situation from our lives.

We cannot.

The more useful question is:

Are we giving the body enough opportunities to recover from stress?

And emerging research suggests that relaxation practices, including meditation and certain forms of sound-based meditation, may have an important role to play.


You may have seen statements online claiming that 75%, 80%, or even 90% of emergency-room visits are caused by stress.

That is not an accurate interpretation of current national emergency-department data.

There is no credible CDC or AHRQ national statistic showing that 75–90% of ER visits are caused by stress.

The actual numbers are still significant.

CDC data from 2017–2019 found that adults made an annual average of approximately 13.2 million emergency-department visits involving a mental health disorder, representing about 12.3% of all adult emergency-department visits. Importantly, these diagnoses include a broad range of mental health conditions and substance-use disorders not simply everyday stress.

CDC data from the same period found an annual rate of 14.4 emergency-department visits per 1,000 adults involving anxiety, stress-related, or other nonpsychotic mental disorders.

Historical AHRQ data also showed that between 2006 and 2013, the population rate of emergency-department visits involving depression, anxiety, or stress reactions increased by 55.5%, from 2,537 to 3,945 visits per 100,000 people age 15 and older.

These numbers do not mean that stress causes one out of every eight ER visits.

They tell us something more nuanced and arguably more important:

Mental health, anxiety, stress-related conditions, and physical health are deeply interconnected, and they represent a meaningful part of healthcare utilization.


What Actually Happens to the Body Under Stress?

Stress is not simply an unpleasant thought or emotion.

It is a physiological response.

When the brain perceives a challenge or threat, the body activates mechanisms designed to help us respond. Stress hormones are released, heart rate can increase, blood pressure may rise, muscles tense, breathing changes, and the brain becomes more alert.

In the short term, this response can be extremely useful.

If you need to react quickly to danger, solve an urgent problem, or perform under pressure, your stress response helps prepare your body for action.

The problem arises when the emergency response becomes a lifestyle.

According to MedlinePlus, prolonged stress can keep the body in a heightened state of alert. Chronic stress is associated with increased risks or worsening of conditions including:

  • high blood pressure

  • heart disease

  • diabetes

  • obesity

  • depression and anxiety

  • sleep problems

  • headaches and muscle tension

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health describes the stress response in similar terms: heart rate, breathing rate, blood pressure, and muscle tension can increase during the fight-or-flight response. Chronic stress may contribute to or worsen sleep disorders, headaches, digestive problems, anxiety, depression, and other conditions.

This is why managing stress is about much more than simply “feeling calmer.”

Recovery from stress is part of maintaining physical and psychological health.


Your Body Needs a Counterbalance: The Relaxation Response

Fortunately, the stress response is not the only state available to the body.

The body is also capable of entering what researchers describe as the relaxation response.

NCCIH describes this response as essentially the physiological counterbalance to stress: heart rate can slow, blood pressure can decrease, and stress-related physiological activity can settle. Relaxation techniques such as meditation, breathing practices, guided imagery, and progressive relaxation can help encourage this shift.

This gives us an important way to think about stress management.

We may not be able to remove the stressful meeting.

We may not be able to eliminate traffic.

We cannot control every financial concern, family responsibility, deadline, or unexpected event.

But we can intentionally create periods during which the body is no longer being asked to respond, perform, solve, react, or protect.

That is where practices such as meditation, yoga, breathwork, and sound meditation become particularly interesting.


Where Does Sound Fit Into Stress Management?

Human beings have been using sound in ceremonial, meditative, spiritual, and healing traditions for centuries.

Modern research is now beginning to examine what happens physiologically and psychologically when people engage with sound in structured relaxation environments.

The scientific literature is still developing, particularly when it comes to what the wellness industry broadly calls “sound healing.”

However, the research that does exist is promising.

A 2025 scoping review examined 34 studies involving sound interventions and adult stress responses. Researchers looked at interventions involving music, natural sounds, voices, and other auditory experiences.

Overall, many of the studies found favorable effects on psychological or physiological measures of stress, including measures involving blood pressure, cortisol, heart rate variability, and perceived stress.

The researchers also made an important point: sound does not affect everyone identically. Personal preference, environment, volume, cultural background, and the characteristics of the sound itself can influence whether an experience feels relaxing or stimulating.

That distinction is important.

There is no magical frequency that automatically “heals” every nervous system.

The relationship between sound and relaxation is more complex—and more interesting—than that.


What Does Research Say About Singing Bowls?

Singing bowls are among the better-studied instruments used in modern sound meditation.

A 2017 observational study involving 62 adults found that after a Tibetan singing bowl meditation, participants reported significantly lower levels of tension, anger, fatigue, and depressed mood compared with measurements taken before the session.

A randomized controlled trial examining Tibetan singing bowl sounds also found evidence of a relaxation response, including changes in heart-rate variability and reductions in self-reported anxiety compared with control conditions.

More recently, a 2025 systematic review of 14 quantitative studies examining Tibetan singing bowl interventions found that most studies reported reductions in anxiety or depressive symptoms, improvements in well-being, increases in heart-rate variability, and decreases in heart rate.

However, the researchers also emphasized that the studies varied considerably in their methodology and that more rigorous controlled trials are necessary.

That is an important distinction between responsible wellness education and exaggerated marketing.

The evidence is promising.

It is not proof that singing bowls cure disease.


And What About Gongs?

This is especially relevant for people interested in gong sound baths.

Research specifically examining gongs is much smaller than the broader literature on music, meditation, and singing bowls.

But there is some direct evidence.

One randomized experimental study examined gong meditation among nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Eighty nurses were assigned to intervention or control groups, with 79 completing the study. Participants in the intervention received seven gong meditation sessions lasting approximately 50–60 minutes each.

Compared with the control group, nurses participating in gong meditation experienced significant improvements in perceived stress and occupational burnout.

That is encouraging.

But one study should not be turned into a sweeping medical claim.

We cannot accurately say that a gong “heals the nervous system,” cures anxiety, prevents disease, or replaces conventional treatment.

What the research allows us to say is more grounded:

Gong meditation appears to be a promising complementary practice for relaxation and stress reduction, and further research is warranted.


Why Can a Gong Sound Bath Feel So Different From Simply Sitting Quietly?

Anyone who has experienced a large gong up close knows that it produces an unusually complex sound environment.

A gong does not create one simple, continuous note.

Different frequencies, overtones, harmonics, volume changes, and patterns continually emerge and disappear.

That constantly changing auditory information can give the attention something to follow.

For someone who struggles to sit silently because the mind immediately starts planning, worrying, reviewing conversations, or thinking about tomorrow, sound can provide an external point of attention.

Instead of trying to force the mind to become quiet, you listen.

The sound changes.

Your attention follows it.

Your breathing may naturally begin to slow.

Your muscles may soften.

For a period of time, there is nothing to accomplish.

That combination of focused attention, reduced external demands, physical stillness, and immersive sound may help create conditions that support relaxation.

That experience should not be confused with a medical treatment.

But relaxation itself has legitimate physiological value.


“Nervous System Regulation”: What Does That Really Mean?

The phrase nervous system regulation has become extremely popular in wellness culture.

It is useful but it can also be oversimplified.

Your nervous system is not either “regulated” or “dysregulated” like an on/off switch.

It constantly adjusts to internal and external demands.

What people usually mean when they describe feeling “regulated” is that they experience things such as:

  • slower or more comfortable breathing

  • reduced muscular tension

  • less mental agitation

  • greater emotional steadiness

  • improved ability to rest

  • feeling safe enough to stop being constantly alert

Practices that promote relaxation may help create conditions associated with this calmer state.

A gong sound bath can therefore be described appropriately as a practice that may support relaxation, stress recovery, and autonomic regulation.

That is a much more scientifically responsible statement than promising that vibrations literally “reset” or “heal” the nervous system.


Stress Management Is Not Something We Should Wait to Need

One of the most difficult things about chronic stress is how quickly we adapt to it.

You can become accustomed to:

Being tired.

Sleeping poorly.

Having tight shoulders.

Feeling rushed.

Checking your phone constantly.

Thinking about work while trying to rest.

Feeling unable to completely switch off.

Eventually, tension begins to feel like your normal baseline.

MedlinePlus specifically notes that people can become so accustomed to chronic stress that they may stop recognizing it as a problem.

That may be one of the most compelling reasons to create an intentional stress-management practice before reaching complete exhaustion.

You do not have to wait until your body forces you to stop.


A Gong Sound Bath Is Not Medical Treatment—and It Doesn't Need to Be

A responsible conversation about sound baths should include this distinction.

Gong baths and other forms of sound meditation should not replace medical evaluation, psychotherapy, medication, or other clinically indicated treatments.

New chest pain, significant difficulty breathing, fainting, severe or unusual symptoms, or a mental-health crisis should be evaluated appropriately not assumed to be “just stress.”

Likewise, anyone particularly sensitive to sound should choose a comfortable position and distance from the instruments and communicate with the facilitator.

Sound meditation is best understood as a complementary wellness and relaxation practice.

And that still matters.

You exercise even though exercise is not a cure for every disease.

You prioritize sleep even though sleep does not replace medical care.

You meditate even though meditation cannot solve every problem in your life.

In the same way, creating intentional periods of deep rest may become part of a larger strategy for caring for your mental and physical well-being.


Maybe the Goal Isn't to Escape Stress. Maybe It's to Recover From It.

Modern life will continue to contain pressure.

There will always be another email.

Another deadline.

Another notification.

Another responsibility.

The goal of stress management is not to create a life in which nothing difficult ever happens.

It is to develop practices that help us return from activation.

Stress → recovery.
Effort → rest.
Stimulation → stillness.
Doing → simply being.

That rhythm matters.

A gong sound bath creates an environment in which, for a period of time, you are invited to put everything else down.

You lie back.

You listen.

The sound moves around you.

And instead of asking your body to do one more thing, you finally give it permission to do less.
